Abstract
During field surveys in the groundnut-producing districts of the Northern Transvaal, large numbers of Astigmatid mites were found associated with the subterranean parts of groundnut plants. These mites were usually heavily contaminated with fungus spores. Laboratory studies demonstrated that the mites could be maintained equally well on pure diets of either fungus or groundnut. It was found that under certain circumstances the mites could penetrate groundnut pods and feed on the kernels, disseminating fungus spores during the process.
