Abstract

Introduction: Studies in mouse embryonic stem cells (ESCs) where a major protein involved in microRNA (miRNA, miR) biogenesis has been knocked out; DGCR8 (DiGeorge Critical Region 8) demonstrated that the loss of miRNAs, particularly the highly conserved miR-295 and 302 clusters, results in cell cycle defects, delayed expression of differentiation markers, and an inability to downregulate pluripotency markers.
