Abstract
In order to predict drawbar pull as a function of slip it is necessary to know the relation between surface shear stress and deformation. This relationship is investigated experimentally and it is concluded that the deformation required to obtain a fixed proportion of the maximum shear stress is not constant, as is generally assumed, but grows with the applied normal pressure. A suitable equation to describe the experimental results is given, with some qualitative reasoning about the soil stress system to support it.
