Abstract

Experiments performed on totally isolated dog kidneys demonstrate that the kidney possesses intrinsic mechanisms that tend to keep at a constant level blood concentration, plasma sodium, and plasma oncotic pressure; an intrarenal feed-back effect between these parameters and sodium and water excretion is evidenced. The role of this intrarenal effect in the control of total body sodium and water balance is discussed together with other factors involved.
