Abstract
The role of an obstetric associate in the private practice of a single-specialty group of obstetrician-gynecologists is described. The services or procedures to be performed by the obstetric associate are documented in the protocol presented and tabulated for evaluation. In response to a questionnaire as to the acceptance of the obstetric associate by patients, 94.5 per cent accepted abdominal examination without reservations, 88 per cent would have accepted vaginal examination, and 49 per cent would have accepted being delivered by the obstetric associate, with 34.5 per cent uncertain and 16.5 per cent expressing nonacceptance.
