Abstract

Abstract We used computational modeling to study the role of adaptation in auditory processing. We found that adaptation endows auditory cortex with sequence sensitivity. While adaptation may underlie such phenomena as N1 attenuation and mismatch negativity (MMN) generation, its purpose in natural stimulation conditions may be to allow cortex to differentiate the temporal structure of sounds.
