Abstract

The acute lung injury/acute respiratory distress syndrome (ALI/ARDS) is an acute onset progressing hypoxemic respiratory failure.Overwhelming inflammatory response is involved. There is still no effective treatment strategy available.Nucleotide-binding domain (NOD)-like receptor protein 3(NLRP3) inflammasome is an oligomer of intracellular proteins that, once activated by an insult or damaging signal, induces pyroptosis and the production of IL-1β and IL-18 which mediate inflammatory response.NLRP3 inflammasome plays an important role in the infectious and inflammatory diseases and can be activated by many factors which induce ALI/ARDS.Further research on the role of NLRP3 inflammasome in ALI/ARDS is important for the clarification of the pathogenesis and treatment of ALI/ARDS. Key words: Acute lung injury; Acute respiratory distress syndrome; Nucleotide-binding domain (NOD)-like receptor protein 3; Inflammasome; pyroptosis
