Abstract

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a debilitating complication following traumatic fracture or hip surgery. Prior research has shown that prophylactic RT given in a single fraction is more effective and more tolerable in the prevention of HO in the perioperative elderly population than six weeks of indomethacin. Given treatment efficacy, more cases of younger patients with traumatic fractures are being referred for prophylactic RT for HO. A recent case report documented the first incidence of radiation induced sarcoma in a 37 year old male following RT for a traumatic acetabular fracture.
