Abstract

An overview is given of the Rhine Basin Program and its achievements in the area of analysing polar organic compounds in water at the (sub)ppb level. The compound classes covered are: polar pesticides, fluorescent whitening agents, organic sulfonic acids, phthalate esters, organophosphorus compounds and organotin compounds. Two different systems, based on liquid chromatography (SAMOS LC) and gas chromatography (SAMOS GC) are described, which were developed for the automated online screening of some of the above compound classes at the level mentioned, and application information is provided. A third system, SAMOS LC-MS, conceived for the verification of SAMOS LC screening results, is also outlined.
