Abstract
Coenzyme Q (ubiquinone) can be efficiently removed from lyophilized mitochondria by extraction with pentane. The extracted mitochondria oxidize neither DPNH nor succinate. Both oxidative activities can be specifically restored, however, by addition of coenzyme Q 10, in the presence of added mitochondrial phospholipids and cytochrome c. The restored DPNH-oxidase activity is fully sensitive to the classical respiratory chain inhibitors, rotenone, antimycin A, and KCN.
