Abstract

In the molecular flow regime the most useful characteristic quantity is the transmission probability. It is a tedious computational task to determine the transmission probability by numerical integration of molecular flow equations or by Monte-Carlo simulation. There are exact results only for tubes of simplest geometry. No more than a few percent of accuracy is normally expected when calculating the transmission probabilities. To consider the transmission probabilities of complete systems the resistance concept is applied. The resistance concept is a realization of Oatley's summation method. The physical picture with this concept suggests several ways of improvement of the addition formula and can help to find the validity region of these formula.
