Abstract
Sorghum gluten meal (SGM) was used to replace 0–100% of soya-bean meal (SBM) in broiler chick diets on a straight nitrogenous basis. The diets were supplemented with l-lysine and dl-methionine. Increasing the proportion of SGM protein depressed ( P < 0.001) weight gain, feed intake and feed efficiency. There was no significant effect of SGM protein on tibia ash, incidence of leg abnormalities and abdominal fat relative weight. Liver relative weight was increased ( P < 0.001) whereas bursa relative weight was decreased ( P < 0.05) with SGM protein. These results suggest that SGM is not equivalent to SBM as a source of protein in broiler chick diets.
