Abstract
Graphical ray-tracing methods have been employed to investigate the way in which the size and intensity distribution of a focal spot affects its resolution capability. Edge band type distributions with a central radiating portion have been considered. The formula ordinarily used with resolution test patterns relating the focal spot size to resolution is modified in terms of a parameter which is determined from the geometric methods described. The numerical value of this parameter is shown to lie between 0 and 1 for edge band type distributions. Graphs of this parameter as a function of the characteristics of the focal spot intensity distribution are presented.
