Abstract

Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between the somatotype ratings and other selected anthropometric measures and the basketball playing performance of a group of highly skilled female basketball players. The subjects were the 53 participants in the 1974 Canadian Women's intercollegiate Athletic Union Basketball Championships. Performance was evaluated during the six games of the championships. The results indicated that none of the basketball performance measures was significantly related to any of the Health-Carter somatotype components. However, total basketball performance, points scored, and rebounding were related to the height of basketball players, so that taller players were generally more highly skilled. The top 10 players were significantly larger than the remaining players on the following anthropometric measures: humerus diameter, biceps girth, calf girth, and weight.
