Abstract

The numbers of rhizobia in unsterilized peat‐based legume inoculants were not significantly related to the numbers in the broths used in their preparation provided the broths contained a minimum of 5 x 108ml‐1. This relationship was also true for 18 of 19 strains grown in sterilized peat. It is considered that counting rhizobia in broth culture is unproductive except where the production of inoculants is in its development phase.
