Abstract

Elementary considerations show that the interacting-boson model (version 1) contains a degree of freedom not present in the Bohr-Mottelson model. This is illustrated with a simple example. The additional degree of freedom obscures the relationship between the static quadrupole moment and the shape of the nucleus.
