Abstract

Type 2 diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder caused by a deficiency of beta cell function leading to varying degrees of insulin deficiency and insulin resistance. The decline of beta cell function is the central part in the development of type 2 diabetes. The dedifferentiation of pancreatic beta cells is one of the important mechanisms of islet dysfunction. In recent years, it has been shown that the decrease of the activity of the transcription factor forkhead box O1 (FoxO1) is closely related to the dedifferentiation of beta cells. The study of the specific mechanism of FoxO1 involved in the dedifferentiation of beta cells and the redifferentiation of the differentiated cells will provide new ideas for the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes.
