Abstract

A species of Diaporthe occurring on grapevines in Portugal was identified as D. perjuncta. The fungus was self-fertile and the teleomorph was produced on sterilized grapevine twigs inoculated with single ascospore cultures. Asci and ascospores in culture were indistinguishable from those found on the host in the field. Apart from its association with Vitis, the anamorph bears little resemblance to Phomopsis viticola but appears to be more closely related to Phomopsis oblonga. The taxonomy of the anamorph is discussed.
