Abstract

The adrenergic neurone blocking potencies of a number of guanidine derivatives were assessed using three isolated sympathetically innervated organs: rabbit ileum, guinea pig vas deferens and the artery segment from the rabbit's ear. The most suitable of these preparations for making quantitative comparisons was the isolated artery segment, and the results so obtained were used as the basis for a study of structure-activity relationships. Some of these compounds were also tested for local anaesthetic activity using the guinea pig weal and mouse tail methods. It was found that the local anaesthetic activity of these compounds was unrelated to their adrenergic neurone blocking activity.
