Abstract
The present chapter will survey a range of diverse approaches to the unity problem offered by Horwich, Wiggins, Gibson, Gaskin, and various multiple-relation theories. The discussion will not be exhaustive, of course; in particular, accounts due to Jeff King and Scott Soames will be discussed in chapter 6, for their discussion requires some background. The criticism of the approaches to be considered presently will be that each of them either fails on its own terms or is inconsistent with the demands of our desiderata on an adequate solution. I shall reach a somewhat different conclusion as regards the so-called multiple relation theory of Russell. While ultimately unsuccessful, I think, the theory does point us in the direction of the solution to be entertained in the following chapter.
