Abstract

In March 1896 the Council decided that a Year-book should be published annually as soon after the Anniversary Meeting as practicable, and the first number for 1896-7 was published in the early months of the year 1897. This new publication was to replace the list of the Fellows with their addresses, which had been published each year for some time past, and to include certain other information, such as the membership of Committees, which had to be revised yearly or at short intervals. When the compilation of the Year-book was put in hand, it became clear that there was a considerable amount of other information, mainly historical, which would not need revision except after comparatively long periods; it was, however, very desirable that it should be available for easy reference and in a reliable form. It was therefore decided to collect such material and to print it as a separate publication under the title of the Record of the Royal Society .
