Abstract

An investigation has been made of the rate at room temperature of recombination of methyl radicals by photolysing mercury dimethyl in the presence of nitric oxide and comparing the rates of the reactions CH3+CH3→C2H6and CH3+NO→CH3NO.It is concluded that k1½/k2 is approximately equal to 3×10−5. If Forsyth's value for k2 is accepted, this leads to a collision yield for methyl radical recombination of 4.4×10−5.
