Abstract

This paper presents the Electricité de France real-time data transmission system, under operation since several years. The first part introduces briefly the French System (peak-load = 60 GW, 86 fossil fuel thermal units, 43 nuclear units, 500 hydro-power plants...) and describes the organization of the electrical system operation (one national load control center, seven regional load control centers, 116 supervisory control centers performing remote control of the transmission substations, 7 hydroelectric control centers performing remote control of the hydro-power plants). The second part of the paper is dealing with the real-time control system : basic principles applied (hierarchical organization, front-end computers, package switching network, transmission procedure based on X25...); computer organization of each level; operation of the data transmission system. The last part is introducing the future and mainly the next generation of the Regional Control Center, now under development.
