Abstract

The reactions of FeCl 2, FeCl 3, CoCl 2, Na 3[Co(NO) 2) 6], [Co(NH 3) 5H 2O]Cl 3 and NiCl 2 with the molten alkali metal carbonate eutectic were investigated. It was found that FeCl 2 and FeCl 3 reacted with the melt to precipitate Fe 2O 3 which was converted into LiFeO 2 on further heating. Cobalt(II) added to the melt as CoCl 2 or produced by the decomposition of Na 3[Co(NO 2) 6] was found to react with the melt to form Co 3O 4 which was also formed in the reaction of [(Co(NH 3) 5H 2O]Cl 3 and was partially converted into LiCoO 2. Nickel(II) chloride reacted to precipitate stable NiO. The molten carbonate eutectic donated oxide ions in these reactions with the evolution of CO 2 which was partially reduced to CO in some reactions.
