Abstract

Chemical and spectroscopic evidence is presented which suggests that the 1 : 1 adduct formed by 1,2-bisdiphenylphosphinoethane(triethylphosphine)trimethylgermylplatinum(II) chloride [(Ph2P·CH2·CH2·PPh2)(Et3P)PtGeMe3]-Cl and hydrogen chloride contains the hydrogen dichloride anion rather than a hexaco-ordinate PtIV cation. The species present in a methanolic solution of this adduct are discussed. The adduct reacts with a further 1 mol. of hydrogen chloride to give a complex of 1 : 2 stoicheiometry, which is stable at low temperatures but readily evolves hydrogen chloride in vacuo at room temperature.
