Abstract

The rate of the electron exchange reaction between U(IV) and U(VI) ions was studied at 25 deg in water, ethanol and water --ethanol solvents and at various concentrations of U(N), U(VI), and hydrochloric acid. The order of the reaction with respect to each of these substances was found to depend strongly on the composition of the solvent. Finally, mechanistic and kinetic expressions are suggested which can account for these orders in solvents up to 60 vol.% ethanol.
