Abstract

Curculionid weevils have three types of proventricular armature. The simplest type occurs in primitive groups of weevils with straight antennae, and is characterized by eight longitudinal, unsclerotized folds randomly covered with discrete setae. The majority of curculionids have eight sclerotized plates, each bearing two dense rows of setae in longitudinal arrangement. Ophryastini, Thecesterninae, and Gonipterinae also have eight sclerotized plates, but each plate bears a large, toothlike process. Representatives of 54 subfamilies were studied.
