Abstract

In Part I mathematical solutions for magnetohydrodynamic disturbances and fluid motion are given for the case of a magnetic dipole, suddenly introduced in an infinite incompressible viscous fluid of finite electrical conductivity, and placed parallel to the exciting field. Walen’s approximation is used and is exhibited as the first term of a series expansion of the exact solution. In Part II another problem is solved where the dipole is kept fixed in the direction of thez-co-ordinate and so placed to be perpendicular to the exciting field, which is considered to be in thex-axis.
