Abstract

Abstract The impregnation order in the preparation of La2O3-promoted Rh/SiO2 catalysts has a strong influence on the catalytic properties in the high pressure CO hydrogenation as well as on the chemisorption properties. Highly dispersed Rh catalysts are obtained by impregnating La(NO3)3 prior to Rh(NO3)3. A La2O3-induced decrease of CO chemisorption relative to H chemisorption was not observed. While the turnover frequencies for the formation of hydrocarbons are only influenced by the Rh crystallite size, La2O3 promotes the formation of methanol and higher oxygenates. Oxygenate formation is related to the size of the Rh-La2O3 interface and therefore decreases at high La2O3 content in the catalysts in which Rh was impregnated first.
