Abstract

This paper outlines the progress of work on the Dublin Port Tunnel Project together with describing the principal transportation engineering, geotechnical and environmental aspects relating to the design, construction and future operation of the tunnel, which is currently one of Europe's largest urban road tunnel construction projects at US$790million. The Dublin Port Tunnel is situated in Ireland's capital city, Dublin and will provide an underground road link between the City's orbital motorway system in the suburbs, to the Port located in the City center area. The primary purpose of the project is to remove heavy goods vehicle through traffic from the City center and residential areas by providing a high quality access route to and from the Port.
