Abstract

Community colleges have offered service-learning since the 1960s (Robinson and Barnett 1996), but the vast majority of curriculum-based programs got underway in the 1990s and 2000s due to federal funding from the Learn and Serve America program of the Corporation for National and Community Service. Funding from Learn and Serve America created the two largest community college service-learning consortium programs in the country, at the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) and the Community College National Center for Community Engagement (CCNCCE). These two organizations provided grants for program development and training for faculty, staff, and administrators from more than 130 community colleges from 1994 through 2012.
