Abstract Slow neutrons are a privileged tool to explore the low-energy high-precision frontier of particle physics. This overview on the present status of neutron-particle physics is intended to serve as a basis for the ensuing discussion of the potential and future development of neutron-particle physics at the European Spallation Source ESS.
