Abstract

The growth of NbC single crystals and broadly defined NbN eutectic “single crystals” by an r.f. floating zone process was examined. Large pure crystals 6–8 mm in diameter and 30–100 mm long were obtained. We determined the microstructures, the growth directions, the chemical analyses, the lattice parameters, the electrical resistivities, the variations of the N/Nb and C/Nb ratios along the radial and growth directions, the ESCA spectra ( ESCA  electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis) and the superconducting transition temperatures of the products.
