The power game: Cultural influences on gender and leisure

Abstract

This study reviews the literature on cultural theory and raises questions related to the contradictions of culture and the position of women. It attempts to address research that deals with the concepts and foundations of leisure. It suggests ways of thinking about leisure and explains the importance of leisure in social life. How have different cultures had an influence on women's lives and their leisure? And how do cultural differences and clashes inform which concepts of leisure are appropriate to women? Emphasis is placed upon the importance of inter-societal and gender differences and how these differences influence social behaviour and social roles, and the clashes between diverse cultures.
