Abstract

The race has been on for some time to use genetic engineering, i.e. recombinant DNA technology, in a constructive, applied fashion. Although not a participant, I have enjoyed observing the original and often virtuostic exploits of the competitors. My own interest, in the meantime, has been to study with a minimum of manipulation, a natural parasexual genetic system, which I believe constitutes a precedent for the use of genetic engineering to introduce novel and potentially useful morphogenetic and physiological characters into plants.
