Abstract
Abstract Can the European experiment in political organization and governance give a better general understanding of how political order is possible and what factors influence the rise and decline of voluntary cooperative efforts across established entities and boundaries? Can it shed light on why sovereign states voluntarily join a larger political unit, such as the European Union, and what consequences there are for the component units when they become part of a larger entity? Can we learn something about the significance of democratic institutions and actors for the dynamics of change in political orders? These themes are elaborated in the rest of the volume.
