Abstract

The Positioning and Navigation system has become practical, with number of applications using Global Positioning System. Today GPS — based navigation systems can be found in many fields globally. To compete with GPS, other navigation systems have being developed like GLONASS, GALILEO, Beidou, Quasi Zenith. Like other countries India has come up with the idea of its own navigation system called Indian Regional Navigation Satellite system (IRNSS). Using IRNSS receiver we intend to develop a handheld device with 7 inch TFT which displays latitude and longitude map of a given area (to say JGI campus), and with a pre-defined hotspot locations as reference points over the map. Our proposed handheld device displays the latitude and longitude positions of both GPS and IRNSS receivers. The various positions collected from the IRNSS and GPS receivers are plotted on the latitude and longitude map of JGI campus which is meant for our handheld device instead of readily available maps like google maps. Therefore, our proposed system doesn't require Internet access to download the maps, which makes the system to be more cost effective and independent system.
