Abstract
Blacks have lived in the United States and Canada for centuries. The politics of othering has been at the center of American politics since the Civil War. There were fewer Blacks in Canada in the nineteenth century and Blacks were restricted from entering Canada in significant numbers until the 1960s. Despite the differences in the Black population between the two countries, there were comparable efforts to other Blacks.
