Abstract

Step into a modern primary school and your first impression might well be that the children enjoy an almost anarchic freedom. It will not be long before this first impression is modified and the many constraints imposed upon the children both by the teachers and their peers become apparent. Nevertheless there will remain the feeling that the children have considerable latitude in many respects, that they are able, and indeed encouraged, to make choices for themselves within certain limits, and that they are allowed to order their own day. This seems far removed from the strictly controlled despotism that once ruled in the elementary schoolroom. No longer are children told exactly what they are to do at any given time: they are supplied only with guidelines and trusted to follow the spirit rather than the letter of the benevolent suggestions supplied by the attendant adults.
