Abstract

There are forty-two Anglican cathedrals in England (including the Isle of Man) and, considered as buildings, they range over a period of many centuries. In addition, our heritage includes a number of what are sometimes called 'greater churches' (e.g. abbeys), and to them much of what follows is applicable. Nevertheless, for convenience, it is to cathedrals as such that attention is being given.
