Abstract
Abstract A system has been developed which allows the generation of sidestream smoke under ambient conditions and its introduction into an enclosure in which subjects can be exposed to controlled atmospheres. A radiotracer, 1‐iodohexadecane, has been used to study the physical behaviour of sidestream smoke in this enclosure which shows that a significant fraction of particulate material evaporates when the smoke is mixed and diluted with clean air. Therefore, care must be taken when extrapolating results of environmental surveys to human intake and risk.
