Abstract

Pediatricians are becoming increasingly aware of changes in the roles of pediatric specialists and subspecialistsalists in the community. These are due to changes in the economic system and its regulation of practices, the manpower distribution within pediatrics, the allocation of clinical responsibilities to non-MD health care professionals, and other factors. Within the last year or two, several articles have appeared in the pediatric literature that debate the future of pediatrics and the future role of pediatricians in the health care system. In the interests of promoting an organized debate of these issues, pediatric department chairmen, program directors, and practicing pediatricians were invited to a working conference, Pediatric Residency Program of the Future, in October 1986. The conference was held at the SunBurst Resort in Scottsdale, Ariz, and was cosponsored by the Children's Health Center of St Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center and the Flinn Foundation, Phoenix, and Ross Laboratories,
