Abstract

Until as recently as the mid-1970s, historians of education paid little attention to teachers and teacher education. This article examines the role of junior and community colleges in the preparation of teachers, with emphasis on the 1920s, and into the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. The article concludes by connecting today's interest in alternative teacher certification at community colleges with the challenges of the past.
