Abstract

A model is presented which describes the factors influencing the nature of nonstoichiometric amorphous precursor phases precipitating in highly supersaturated solutions. The model is applied to amorphous calcium phosphate and explains the variable stoichiometry of this solid. The relation between amorphous calcium phosphate and the precursor phases in the precipitation of strontium phosphates is also shown.
