Abstract

This paper studies the influence of the randomness at the material level on fatigue behaviors of reinforced concrete structures. Nine same beam specimens were loaded in fatigue in the same manner. It is seen that the fatigue lives, failure modes, deflections, concrete and reinforcement strains of the specimens all exhibited much scatter. The different failure modes of the specimens, which consisted of a flexural mode and a shear mode, are explained by several competing failure mechanisms. Analysis of the experiment using the S-Nc curve approach indicates that this approach cannot provide a correct estimate on the failure modes of the specimens.
