Abstract

Abstract The origin of language is obscure and the question has led to a lot of speculation. We will say something about it in this final chapter, but we do not promise anything like a satisfactory answer. Although we will obviously never be in a position to observe the origin of language in humans, we can put ourselves in a position to make informed hypotheses by looking at recurrent historical changes, the development of language in children, and the development of pidgin and creole languages. Child language acquisition was covered in chapter thirteen and the nature of pidgins and creoles is described below.
