Abstract

This manuscript describes the determination of the orientational order parameter of the ferroelectric liquid crystals having chemical formulas C36H47NO5, C37H49NO5 and C39H53NO5. The ordinary and extraordinary refractive indices of these compounds in the nematic phase are measured by using a small angle prism and modified spectrometer. By well-known Vuk’s method the orientational order parameter is estimated. The optical textures of these compounds are apprehended using an optical polarizing microscope. The microscopic textures are analysed using MATLAB software.and the orientational order parameter is estimated. The limitations and merits of the image analysis technique is discussed.
