Abstract

The problem of the onset of convection in a cylindrical annulus with conical end boundaries in the presence of an azimuthal and a radial component of a magnetic field is considered. It is shown that the effect of the radial component on the convection rolls can be quite different from that of the azimuthal component. Convection rolls with low azimuthal wavenumbers are preferred in certain regions of the parameter space. Implications of the analysis for planetary applications are briefly discussed.
