Abstract

An Old Latin manuscript agrees with the Samaritan Pentateuch in reading tMount Gerizimt at Deut 27:4, which narrates Moses' command to build an altar ton the day that you cross over the Jordan into the land.t The OL-SP reading is a variant contrasting with tMount Ebalt in the traditional MT and the preserved LXX. The tMount Gerizimt reading suggested as the second stage can be seen in the SP, the Greek Pap. Kristin De Troyer concludes that the OG is tthe oldest stratum of the text of the book of Joshuat; the second stratum would have been the t(proto)-Masoretic textt. Her argument focuses on tthree differences among the MT, the OG, and the Qumran textst: (1) the importance of Moses; (2) the reinterpretation of Deuteronomy 27 in Joshua; and (3) the location of the altar. Keywords:Mount Gerizim; Old Latin manuscript; Qumran texts
