Abstract

The study of the Samaritan Pentateuch (SP) entered a new stage when 4QpaleoExodm was presented in an article by P. Skehan in 1955. The title of the article announced that there was a book of Exodus in the Samaritan Recension from Qumran. Deut 18:18-22 is found in the second main location for insertions, at the centre of the Pentateuch, the theophany at Sinai or Horeb, Exod 20. The Samaritan Pentateuch contains the major expansions of the DSS plus some that are not extant in these texts, together forming the Moses layer. The Samaritans write their Pentateuch in characters developed from the old Hebrew script. The palaeo-Hebrew script in the inscriptions on Mount Gerizim, termed Neo-Hebrew by the publisher, is an older example of the same development, though they are incised, not written, characters. Keywords: expansion; Mount Gerizim; palaeo-Hebrew script; Samaritan Pentateuch (SP)
